Tulsa evened the series on the strength of two-out hits in the fourth from Roberto Clemente who knocked in two with a double and Harry Lumley who singled in another.  Walter Johnson gave up solo home runs to Springfield’s Mike Schmidt and George Davis, but allowed only two other hits and no walks.  Johnson notched the win and game MVP honors with Dennis Eckersley garnering a save.  Pedro Martinez took the loss.

Tulsa’s battery delighted a home crowd with Randy Johnson hurling a 4-hit shutout and catcher Bill Dickey delivering three runs on a homer and sacrifice fly.  Jeff Bagwell added an RBI and 2 hits.  Harry Lumley continued to surprise with a 2-for-5 performance and Honus Wagner went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base.  Greg Maddux allowed only 2 earned runs in seven innings, but took the loss.  Johnson was the game MVP.  Tulsa’s Willie Stargell extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

Springfield took the lead and held it to tie the series at 2-2.  The Rifles brought out the big artillery, with a 3-run homer from game MVP Barry Bonds, a 2-run shot from Eddie Collins and solo blasts from Mickey Cochrane and George Davis.  Clark Griffith got the win and Bruce Sutter earned his second save.  Addie Joss, who allowed all 7 Springfield runs, suffered the loss.  Garry Sheffield was the Optic’s top performer, going 2 for 3 and adding a stolen base.  The Rifled stopped Willie Stargell’s hitting streak at 17.

Johnny Mize blasted the Rifles into the series lead, knocking two into the stands at Jim Thorpe Park and accounting for 5 RBIs.  Sam Thompson and Mickey Cochrane added 2 hits each for Springfield, which scored 8 runs on only 9 hits.  Tulsa could score only 2 despite 11 hits, including 2 each from Honus Wagner, Willie Stargell, and the amazing Harry Lumley.  Rick Reuschel won for the second time in the series, while Ted Lyons took the loss.  Mize received the game MVP award.  Lumley hit the longest home run of his brief career into the second tier in right center field, scoring both of Tulsa’s runs.

After two straight losses at home, the Optics shocked a capacity crowd at Don Busch Stadium by plating nine runs in two innings.  With 2 on and 2 out, Willie Stargell sent a Pedro Martinez fastball over the right field wall in the third and repeated the feat with 2 on and 2 out in the fourth.  Harry Lumley added two RBIs with a subsequent fourth-inning homer.  Honus Wagner and Charlie Gehringer contributed two hits each for the visitors.  Walter Johnson was ineffective, allowing 7 runs in 6 innings, but took his second win of the series while Dennis Eckersley took his second save.  Martinez, who allowed all 9 Tulsa runs, went to 0-2 in the series.  Sam Thompson had 2 bases-empty home runs, a single, and a stolen base for the Rifles.  Barry Bonds, Mike Schmidt, Eddie Collins, and Johnny Mize also homered in the losing cause.  Stargell was the game MVP.

At one point in the season, Randy Johnson was 1-4 and such a disappointment for the Mounties that then sent him to Triple A before trading him to the Optics.  With Tulsa, Johnson found himself and went 8-4 as the #2 starter in the rotation.  In the seventh game of the World Series, the Big Unit capped his comeback by holding the Rifles to a single run, off a Jackie Robinson home run.   Roberto Clemente’s 2-run homer off of losing pitcher Greg Maddux was enough to bring the Big Pig to Tulsa.  Bill Dickey and Garry Sheffield had two hits for the Optics while Ted Abernathy gained a save.  Johnson received his second game MVP award in the series.

Series Notes

Springfield outscored Tulsa 32 to 26, but lost 3 games by 1 run.

Offensive MVP Harry Lumley led all batters in hits and batting average and led the Optics in slugging average and On-Base Percentage+Slugging Average (OPS).  Lumley joined Tulsa as a free agent when Sam Crawford was injured on 9/13/07.  During 12 games at the end of the regular season, he hit .458 in a platoon role, with 4 home runs.  Including the post-season, he’s hit .415 for the Optics, with a .792 slugging average and 6 home runs in 53 at bats.  Lumley played for the Dodgers between 1904 and 1910.

Rifles offensive MVP Eddie Collins led all players in slugging and OPS, even though his stats were reduced because he had insufficient plate appearances to meet the 3.1/game minimum.

World Series statistics appear below.

****************************

Ruth Named Offensive Player of the Year

Little Rock's Babe Ruth added the OPY award to his trophy case, already crowded with honors for leading the league in home runs by a wide margin (62, 15 more than Richie Allen and Jimmy Foxx), hitting a league-high 150 RBIs, and taking league honors in runs, doubles, on-base percentage, slugging average, walks, extra base hits, and total bases. He's expected to win the West Side Story MVP award, as well.

Greg Maddux Takes Top Pitcher Honors

In a league with a total ERA of 5.07, a 2.45 ERA is impressive, especially when the second-best ERA is over 3. In the course of taking the ERA crown, Greg Maddux won 18 for Springfield while losing only five and earned the SCL's first Pitcher of the Year award. Kevin Brown was the league's only 20-game winner.
